Tajweed for Beginners – Complete Guide to Quran Recitation

Introduction
Learning to recite the Quran correctly is one of the most rewarding journeys a Muslim can take. Tajweed — the set of rules governing Quran recitation — ensures every letter is pronounced with precision and beauty, just as it was revealed.
Whether you are a complete beginner or returning to improve your recitation, this guide covers everything you need. And the best part? You can start with a free trial class at Al Quran Zadi Academy — no commitment required

.
What Is Tajweed?

Tajweed comes from the Arabic root “j-w-d,” meaning to make something excellent. In Quranic context, it refers to the science of reciting the Quran with proper pronunciation, elongation, and articulation.
Allah says in the Quran:
“And recite the Quran with measured recitation.” (Al-Muzzammil: 4)

Why Is Tajweed Important?

Preserves the original sound of the Quran as revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Prevents mistakes that can change the meaning of words
Deepens your spiritual connection during recitation
Follows the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

The Basic Tajweed Rules Every Beginner Must Know

1. Makharij al-Huruf (Articulation Points)
Every Arabic letter exits from a specific point in the mouth or throat. There are 17 articulation points grouped into 5 areas:
Al-Jawf – the empty space of mouth and throat
Al-Halq – the throat
Al-Lisan – the tongue
Al-Shafatan – the two lips
Al-Khayshum – the nasal cavity
2. Noon Sakinah and Tanween Rules

Rule Letters Pronunciation
Idhar ء ه ع ح غ خ Clear pronunciation
Idgham ي ر م ل و ن Merging with next letter
Iqlab ب Converting to Meem sound
Ikhfa Remaining 15 letters Hidden nasal sound

3. Madd (Elongation) Rules
Madd Tabee’i – 2 counts
Madd Wajib Muttasil – 4 to 5 counts
Madd Jaiz Munfasil – 2 to 5 counts
Madd Lazim – 6 counts
4. Qalqalah (Echo Sound)
Qalqalah applies to five letters: ق ط ب ج د
Qalqalah Sughra – minor echo in the middle of a word
Qalqalah Kubra – stronger echo at the end of a verse
5. Waqf and Ibtida (Stopping and Starting)

Sign Meaning
م Must stop
لا Do not stop
ج Permissible to stop
ط Absolute stop preferred

Many parents ask whether Tajweed rules are the same for children. The rules are identical, but the teaching approach must be different:
Use visual aids and colors for each rule
Keep lessons short — 20 to 30 minutes maximum
Use repetition and songs to memorize letters
Reward progress to keep motivation high
